Wild Horses

ON THE RUN by Evangeline Chavez

On a summer morning a friend and I went out to find the Placitas Wild Horses that we were told roamed from Placitas, the adjacent BLM, through the San Felipe Pueblo and the Santo Domingo Pueblo in New Mexico. They have  also been found on both sides of I-25 and east into the Sandia Mountains.

We spotted this wild band in the hills of Placitas, off I-25. As we followed them, the herd lead us to  wide open mesas, divided by steep arroyos, pockmarked by green Juniper and Pinon trees, and covered by prickly pear cactus, cholla cactus, and New Mexico grass.  There were times we only got a glimpse of them, but we  continued to follow them till they completely alluded us.

One Response to “Wild Horses”

  1. Hi Evangeline,
Thanks for coming over to Color of Sand.
What a small world that we live so close. I think we can credit Jack Matthews for our meeting. I am glad to know of your work.
Say, did you ever meet David Cramer who photographs Wild Horses in the BLM area?
I’ll keep an eye on all that you are documenting.
