Loretto Chapel, Santa Fe, New Mexico

Miraculous Staircase by Evangeline Chavez

Loretto Chapel staircase has two 360 degree turns and no visible means of support. It is said that the staircase was built without nails, only wooden pegs. After the completion of the job the carpenter disappeared without being paid, speculating that the carpenter was St. Joseph. That is why it is called the miraculous staircase.

  1. I have seen this many times, but you captured the beauty of this miracle. Don’t forget that the carpenter disappeared after completion of this work.

  2. Correction to my comment: I meant “…complete without the people,” not “picture.” I need more coffee.

  3. Excellent photo. You have to take your time to just get the scene complete without the picture. It’s hard to believe that nails were not used. Thanks, Evangeline.
